Katastrophe: Neue heftige Explosionen des Feuervulkans in Guatemala
Der Feuervulkan in Guatemala kommt nicht zur Ruhe: Nach heftigen Explosionen am Dienstag (Ortszeit) ging ein Ascheregen auf nahe gelegene Ortschaften nieder. Wie die Katastrophenschutzbehörde Conred mitteilte, stieg über dem Krater des 3763 Meter hohen Volcán de Fuego eine mehr als ein Kilometer hohe Aschesäule auf.
Durch den Ausbruch des Feuervulkans am 3. Juni waren 113 Menschen ums Leben gekommen, 329 Menschen gelten immer noch als vermisst. Experten befürchteten, dass der Vulkan erneut einen sogenannten pyroklastischen Strom ausstoßen könne - eine Mischung aus glühendem Gestein, heißem Gas und Asche. Pyroklastische Ströme bewegen sich sehr viel schneller vorwärts als Lavaströme, so dass Anwohnern oft keine Zeit bleibt sich zu retten.
Eine Order zur Evakuierung wurde zunächst jedoch nicht gegeben, wie Conred-Sprecher David de León sagte. Der Feuervulkan, der 35 Kilometer südwestlich der Hauptstadt Guatemala-Stadt liegt, ist schon seit Monaten aktiv. Insgesamt sind mehr als 1,7 Millionen Menschen mehr oder weniger stark von der Naturkatastrophe betroffen.
